Welcome to
We wanted to say a massive thank you for choosing to make a difference with us.
Who are we?
9Trees was founded by Michael Cunningham an experienced habitat and business manager. Since then we have been able to apply our specialist knowledge to create rich and diverse woodlands in the UK.
We are small but passionate team, dedicated to fighting climate change without compromising on biodiversity.
Our vision
To tackle climate change by restoring new woodland habitats, promoting biodiversity and creatig jobs within the countryside sector.
Connecting people to nature, easing eco-anxiety.
Why 9?
9 trees is the number required to balance the average UK citizen’s carbon consumption each year.
By tackling climate change 9Trees at a time, together we can make biodiversity thrive.
So, how do we work?
Landowners supply the land.
Individuals and businesses subscribe or donate.
We plant the trees.
We look after the trees for 50 years.
Who pays for the trees?
Individuals and businesses.
Who plants the trees?
We organise all the work including surveys, mapping, selection of tree species and tree planting .We have our own tree and local conservation planters who carry out the work
Who owns the trees?
We work with the landowner to create a license agreement before we complete the planting.
The land is still owned by the landowner; the trees ‘belong’ to 9Trees subscribers.
How many trees can be planted?
Our smaller wood will usually start at about 500 trees, which requires half an acre of land.
It' doesn’t have to be just woodland; we can plant habitat corridors, shelter belts and wildlife hedges. Under ‘Branching Out’ we can plant anything from 9-9000 trees.
Native trees are selected
UK jobs are crested and sites planted
You can visit your trees
We manage each woodland
Carbon is sequestered
Biodiversity thrives
The stages of tree planting...
Before we plant any trees anywhere, there are many tasks, policies and procedures that we must first follow.
Landowner liaison
After establishing contact with a landowner, we send them an overview of our role and requirements.
Determining suitability
Arranging a site visit
Conducting the site visit to evaluate the suitability and ensure existing habitat is not more valuable than planting a woodland
Creating reports for the landowner to read with assessment implications
Communicating concerns regarding fencing, access issues, planting, sponsor visiting, etc.
Funding/sponsorship
Individual subscription
Business sponsorship
Gift
One off grants or specific opportunities
Legacy and wills gifts including the gift of land
Adherence to these procedures ensures that we are planting the right trees in the right places.
Sapling acquisition
We communicate with local nurseries regarding their local tree stock.
We work with other non-profit organisations and charities, whilst also growing some of our own seed.
Tree planting
Ordering trees (we choose native broadleaf species)
Ordering stakes and guards
Tree planting by either contractors or in-house planters
Site maintenance
We understand that planting the trees is not the end of the road. After planting, we:
Carry out annual visits after 1-5 years to carry out eco-matting through volunteers.
Replant any trees that have died/water if too dry.
Commence ecological surveys after 1-5 years.
We will continue to visit the woodlands and take care of the trees for the next 50 years.

Our media appearances…
We want people to know who we are, what we are up to, and how — together — we can help tackle climate change, draw down carbon, and bring back biodiversity, all the while supporting local people and local communities.
We have been featured on numerous BBC Radio interviews and The Independent. You can watch, listen and read these appearances through our website.
We know we are just one small part of the fight against climate change. If you are doing amazing things to reduce your carbon footprint we would love to hear about it.
